Will Beats Music ‘beat’ the streaming music competition? Not with their technology they won’t.

There’s a new player in the streaming music game, Beats Music.

Yes, Beats as in “Beats By Dre.”

Now at this point, I’d be telling you all about the ‘test drive’ I took of the app, and my general impressions.

But noooo. Beats Music isn’t that simple.

You see, I downloaded the app today, but getting up and running was anything but straightforward.

At the signup page, there were two options: “Sign Up” and “Log In.”

I hit “Sign Up” as the service is new and I didn’t think I could use my MOG account.

After completing a few fields, I got a “Registration is Processing” alert.

Processing? Am I being vetted?

So I took the other route and hit “Log In”.

What’s the harm right?

There was an option to login using either Facebook or Twitter.

I selected Facebook and after a few more pre-populated data entry fields, I got to a “You’re Almost Ready” screen, which I took to mean that I was almost done.

But noooo. Beats Music isn’t that simple.

When I hit “Submit” the screen kinda acted like it wanted to go on to the next step, but stalled.

I tried to click submit several times and several times the app almost did something, and then gave up.

Eventually, I got a “We’re Having Connection Problems.” message and gave up.

So I can’t tell you whether Beats Music is any good or not.

But if you look at their website, it’s awesome.

It’s only logical that Dr. Dre brings his storied music brand to the streaming music arena.

Who better to help you curate the music thats playing on your Beats By Dre headphones than Dre himself?

Now I have no idea if Dr. Dre actually has anything to do with the introduction of Beats Music, but who cares?

Beats Music is actually a collaboration by Dr. Dre, Jimmy Iovine and Trent Reznor.

The fact is that you now have (yet) another streaming service for your iOS or Android device.

If Pandora, Spotify, iTunes Radio, et als aren’t doing it for you, theres a new player ready to disappoint!

And I say disappoint because unlike the other players, who offer ad-free and ad-supported versions of their streaming services, Beats Music has only one speed: premium.

That’s right. Beats Music is a pay to play stream service.

After the seven day trial expires, you’re going to have to fork over $9.99 a month for the privilege of spotty streaming service.

I’m sure it will be great to listen to a stream without those damned commercial interruptions.

That’s because one of Beats Music’s selling points is it’s music curation.

Unlike radio, whose music is determined by some music programmer, or most other streaming services, whose playlists are determined by some algorithm, Beats Music’s titles are curated by real people.

Allegedly, Beats Music employs a bunch of so-called ‘music experts’ to curate it’s playlists, which should mean a better listening experience.

That should be a welcome change to folks who don’t want bots telling them what to listen to.

I’d much rather have my music choices picked by a music nerd than a bot any day!

More important than the human music selection of Beats Music, is the heavy brand recognition that they’ve already built up.

If I had to put up money on who was going to come out on top of the whole steaming music competition, I’d have to go with the guys who have already proven themselves at getting folks ot part with their cash for substandard shit.

If you’re going to part ways with several hundred dollars for a pair of booty ‘branded’ headphones, it’s not a stretch that you’ll part with a few buck a month to listen to a ‘branded’ stream.

Now, I’ve yet to check out whether Beats Music is materially different from other streaming services, in terms of content.

I can say that Beats Music SUCKS in terms of technology because the damn thing doesn’t even work.

Perhaps the demand is so great that their servers are down – yeah that’s the ticket – and they’re overwhelmed with traffic.

Perhaps I will get an email and my registration will go through – one day.

Or perhaps not and I’ll be ignorant of Beats Music forever.

But if this snafu is illustrative of what the rest of the Beats Music experience is like – I’ll keep my $10, thank you very much.

Note to self: update this post if you do get an update from Beats Music.

Bump Beats! Get Skullcandy.


A few years ago, I got my first set of Skullcandy headphones.

I was about to get on a plane to France, and had forgotten my headphones at home.

So I had to cop something from one of those little expensive ass stores inside the airport.

They had all kinds, but one particular pair stood out.

No. Not Beats by Dre.

I was not about to part with three bills for an over-priced set of headphones.

I’m not an audiophile, nor am I a fool.

Not to say that anyone who spend $300 on a pair of headphones is a fool, but…

I digress.

The pair that stood out were Skullcandy Skullcrushers.

From a features perspective, the Skullcrushers were indistinguishable from the rest: volume control, bass boost, collapsible.

But what set it apart were the two skulls on either earpiece.

Hence Skullcandy.

I figured walking around with a pair of white skulls on my ears would be an adequate deterrent to anyone thinking about trying to test the kid, so I bought them.

And you know what? It worked.

Beyond the effective anti-social shielding, they were a damn good set of headphones.

I’ve tried all sorts of headphones, and I prefer the over-the-ear style.

I’m not an iPhone in-the-ear kinda dude.

For one, they never actually stay in your ears.

More importantly, they lack the noise canceling aspect of headphones that cover your entire ear.

My first pair of Skullcandy headphones kept me right – that is, until the little clip on the bass boost broke.

This particular pair had a battery powered bass boost, which you could clip to your clothes.

It contained a switch, to alternate between bass boost and no-bass boost modes, and the volume.

It wasn’t heavy, per se, but it definitely was awkward having this dangling thing on the cord.

Long story short, the clip broke and I was reduced to putting the bass boost switch in my pocket.

Not fresh.

So the other day, I went online and found out that Skullcandy products carry a lifetime warranty.

You heard me right.

Lifetime warranty.

As long as you didn’t do anything to damage your headphones, they’ll replace them.

You heard me right.

They’ll replace them.

You’ve got to complete a form and mail them back to Skullcandy at your own expense.

But of you do, they’ll give you a credit for a replacement pair.

So I sent back my headphones and just got a new pair of Hesh headphones.


Aren’t they beautiful!

They’re awesome.

Great sound.

Noise canceling.



And the best part is that these have a detachable cord with a mic, so I can use them with my iPhone.

If you’re not familiar with Skullcandy, I’d suggest you get acquainted.

They make some wicked headphones.

The next time you’re looking for a pair of over-the-ear headphones, and you don’t want to mortgage your home or sell one of your children to afford them, Shullcandy is the way to go.

SoLoMo Profile: Taap.it

A few days ago, I posted about the Starters+Startups: The Future of SoLoMo & You I’ll be moderating on January 25th at the ShowBiz Store & Cafe.

In preparation for that panel, I’ve decided to profile the companies that will be presenting that day, to (i) learn more about them and (ii) gain a better perspective for their offering.

And I figured I’d take you guys along for the ride.

The first company I’m profiling is Taap.it

(Do they know that that’s an urban euphemism for having sex? Hmmm….)

I started my research by visiting their site.

Taap.it makes great use of their landing page!

And then I watched both of the short animated videos they’ve got on the landing page.

The Vimeo video has better sound than the YouTube one, but you stil get the picture, despite the slightly distorted/muted sound.

After I watched the videos, I clicked on the “Merchants” tab and viewed the various offerings from Monster headphones to pizza.

Watches, headphones, pizza, beer...you name it, Taap.it's got it!

I clicked on a pair of Beats By Dre headphones (did you hear about the split between Beats and Monster?) and was immediately taken to another page which showed me pictures, the price and product specs.

Buy it. Taap it. Add it to your wish list. Share it. Taap.it gets this whole SoLoMo thing down!

Taap.it also gives the address and a map showing me where I could cop it if I wanted to run out and grab them right away (H & B Digital on 46th Street).

There was also a comments section at the bottom, where other Taap.it users could comment on the product, but there was a glitch in the matrix as one user was “tapping it” like a gagillion times.

From here, I went to the “Mobile” side of the site, by tapping the “Mobile” button on the left side of the Taap.it page.

I was immediately presented with the “How Taap.it Works” video I had previously watched on the home page, followed by four frames which walked visitors through the steps to getting items listed on Taap.it.

After taking a look at the rest of the tabs on the page, I navigated to the ‘About Us’ page, where the company provided a little information about the Taap.it service.

Taap.it “combine[s] the best of online and offline shopping and eliminate[s] the frustration. We create[d] a whole new shopping experience and put it in the palm of your hand through a sweet little mobile app, called Taap.it.

You now can browse for specific products, exact dishes, and particular services (more than just store name and location) that your neighborhood stores have to offer. Everything comes with photos so you know exactly what you are getting. You can buy directly on the app and enjoy fast local delivery.”

Taap.it’s app makes brilliant use of mobile and local, by giving Taap.it users information about what they want or are looking for, and helps them locate it within proximity to where they are.

I downloaded the app today, and I’m going to take it for a spin.
