SoLoMo Profile: WeMakeCoolSh.it

The final company which will be presenting at ScenePR’s Starters+Startups: The Future of SoLoMo & You, is WeMakeCoolSh.it (whose name alone is cool).

I started my research on them, by once again, visiting their website, which is also very cool.

The WeMakeCoolSh.it website is way cool.

Being presented with a number of different thumbnails from which I could select, I opted for the top left box, where I learned about Matt+Mark, WeMakeCoolSh.it’s founders.

FYI, theses guys are BEASTS.

Their combined resumes are a veritable Who’s Who of agency luminaries, and include stints at Pepsi, Sony, Philips, IBM, Nike, American Express, DHL, MoMA, LEGO and TiVO (Matt) and R/GA , Organic, Tribal DDB, Ogilvy, Disney, CNN and Adobe (Mark).

From there, I headed back to the home page and clicked on the L Train Network box, which took me to the video where they talked about the pirate network they built for the L train in New York.

Since WeMakeCoolSh.it may be talking about their L Train project, I decided to dig a little deeper and check out more of the related content they offered on the site.

So I checked out the flyer they made to promote the L Train network.

I got lost on a few Sony Ericsson Xperia Studio videos, especially, this one:

After I perused a bunch of additional entries on their site, I decided to see if they had any apps in the iTunes app store.

They don’t have any.

But they have created two apps in the past (while with other agencies), one for Staples

This is an app created in a former (agency) life for the WMCS crew.

and another for XBOX.

This app isn't available any longer.

I looked for these guys on Facebook (and couldn’t find them) and on Twitter (and found them).

But I get that these guys ‘get it’ and won’t hold the failure to (be like sheep and) have a Facebook page against them.

Starters+Startups: The Future of SoLoMo and You

I just got off a planning call with the founders of ScenePR for their January 25th event that I’ll be moderating entitled, Starters+Startups: The Future of SoLoMo & You.

Starters+Startups: The Future of SoLoMo & You!

ScenePR is a business network organization started by Daron Jenkins and Virginia Chu.

They formed ScenePR to help successful business owners, professionals, senior level executives and entrepreneurs stay abreast of the ever-changing technology landscape.

The SoLoMo event is part of a series of events that they put on to unite and educate their membership, initiate professional dialogue, spark thought provoking conversations and create opportunities for professional growth.

The panel, which is being held at the ShowBiz Store and Cafe, located at 19 West 21st Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues, features executives of Wyst.itTaap.it and WeMakeCoolSh.it, which are three innovative brands doing progressive things with social media, location and mobile.

Duy Huynh, the CEO of Taap.it, Matthew McGregor-Mento and Mark Krawczuk, co-founders of WeMakeCoolSh.it, and brothers Yago Amerlinck Huerta and Iker Amerlinck Huerta, co-founders of Wyst.it are the featured speakers at the event.

These CEOs and founders will talk about their respective missions and how they arrived at the ideas that launched their businesses.

They’ll also talk about how their ideas and businesses evolved and changed, how people are connecting now and their visions of social/mobile/local interactions in the future.

The session will be very Tedx, and presenters will each have 15 minutes to talk about the projects/products.

My contribution to the jam will (hopefully) be to wrap up the presentations and help guide the post-presentation Q&A session with the audience.

The founders are hoping that the takeaway for attendees will be an in-depth understanding of the present and future states of SoLoMo, which they acknowledge is both dynamic and growing.

The Samsung Galaxy Note LTE a “Game-Changer”? NOT!!!

Is this really a game-changer? Really?

Yesterday, I had a conversation with Daron Jenkins, a fellow technologist, and one of the founders of SCENEPR, an agency devoted to helping other agencies understand and leverage new media and technology.

Daron and I were talking about their upcoming SoLoMo starters+start ups event, and as we talked about the various potential topics for future sessions, somehow our discussion turned to the soon-to-be-released Samsung Galaxy Note LTE phone, which Daron described as a potential “game-changer.”

You must know that Daron and I are both Apple disciples.

So, needless to say, I was immediately incredulous upon hearing Daron’s statement.

A game-changer, to me, is something that makes all other competitors cringe with fear.

It’s something so totally left-of-center, that most are taken unaware, and left speechless.

A game-changer makes others in the space think, “why didn’t we think of that?”

It leaves them at a loss precisely because it creates or carves out a space for that new product, service, application, or what-have-you, that everyone/thing else seems obsolete in comparison.

Now, if you’re like me, the term “game-changer” evokes thoughts of the killer devices that permanently changed the landscape of the spaces they occupied.

In my humble opinion, there have been a few undeniable game-changers in the mobile space.

The first was the Palm Treo.

The first game-changer. The Palm Treo 270.

It was the first phone that effectively combined a phone with a PDA, offering the ability to make phone calls and keep your calendar, contacts and notes organized in one handy, handheld device.

The iPhone was the next.

The iPhone broke the mold and it's forever been broken.

Although other handset manufacturers offered their own version of the smartphone, Apple created a device that was simultaneously powerful, functional and elegant.

The last was the iPad.

IMO, the iPad ushered the end of all tablet competitors.

Again, while there are other tablets in the market, none have achieved the recognition or stature of Apple’s offering.

Which brings me back to Daron’s statement.

It was with much consternation that I even continued the conversation, in light of what I felt was an obvious flaw in his statement.

We all know that NOTHING competes with Apple.

Sure, Apple’s mobile devices don’t support Flash natively.

And marketers have responded by advising clients that sites be built without Flash.

Sure, Apple releases a new product every other day.

And people routinely line up outside of Apple stores days in advance of every new product release.

Sure, Apple’s products are tres cher.

And people regularly shell out the king’s ransom required to own it’s devices.

So whatever Samsung is coming with, has to be so spectacular, so innovative, so feature rich, so ‘that ish’, that one’s initial visceral response is “I must have it!”

To their credit, their latest commercial, poking fun a Apple-ophiles, does point out Apple’s many shortcomings.

But that doesn’t necessarily equate to changing the game.

At the end of our call, we agreed that deploying the Galaxy Note LTE with AT&T was a major faux pas, with AT&T’s spotty service and network bandwidth.

We also agreed that “game-changer” was an extremely generous characterization for Samsung’s latest entry into the mobile/tablet space.

But we’ll just have to wait and see.

I, for one, am not holding my breath.
